Spinal Decompression for Herniated Discs and Spinal Arthritis

Written By Longview Chiropractic Center on May 25, 2020

Spinal Decompression Spine issues such as herniated discs and spine arthritis can be quite debilitating, making it difficult for you to go about your day-to-day tasks. Even worse, most medications used to treat these conditions only mask the pain rather than solve the root cause of the problem.

Fortunately, you can find relief from a range of spinal issues (including herniated discs and spine arthritis) with spinal decompression. This is a traction therapy applied to the spine to bring about a negative intradiscal pressure to reposition or retract a bulging disc. It also creates a lower pressure along the spinal column, allowing an influx of blood and nutrients into the disc to promote self-healing.

What Happens During a Spinal Decompression Therapy Session?

Spinal decompression therapy utilizes a specialized traction table that gently stretches out the spine, relieving pressure and pinching of the nerves (which causes pain). This is a safer and natural alternative to spine surgery that may come with lifelong complications.

During your session, you’ll lie fully clothed on the traction table, and a harness may be attached to your hips to give you extra support. Then, the top half of the table will remain stationary while the bottom half will gently move back and forth to provide the relaxing stretching effect.

The treatment plan will be tailored to your specific condition. Generally, the total treatment period may range anywhere between 6 to 12 weeks. However, the frequency of your sessions will depend on the severity of your condition. A single spinal decompression session usually takes around 30 minutes, but it may be longer if your treatment plan involves other rehab therapies like acupuncture and massage therapy.

Besides herniated discs and spinal arthritis, this modern therapy can be used to treat several other issues, including:

  • Spinal stenosis (narrowing of the spine)
  • Sciatica (pain, tingling, or weakness that starts from the lower back and extends down to the legs)
  • Neck pain
  • Injured spinal nerve roots
  • Worn spinal joints
