Risks of Not Receiving Whiplash Treatment

Written By Longview Chiropractic Center on December 21, 2018

While many people think of whiplash as something that occurs in conjunction with a car injury, whiplash can affect anyone who receives an impact injury that causes a rapid back-and-forth movement of the head or neck.

Even a sports injury, like a tackle during a football game, or physical abuse, as when someone is severely shaken, can cause trauma to the spinal processes of the neck and upper back.

Symptoms of Whiplash

Symptoms of whiplash include some signs that normally result within a day or so of the triggering event, such as:

  • Neck pain
  • Loss of motion range in the neck
  • Headaches
  • Shoulder, upper back, or arm tenderness
  • Arm tingling or numbness
  • Fatigue
  • Dizziness

But some, less common, signs can take weeks or months to show up, causing people to not associate them with whiplash. These include:

  • Tinnitus
  • Irritable mood
  • Concentration issues
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Blurred vision
  • Depression

Even if you don’t experience any symptoms after a car or other type of impact injury, you should see a chiropractor immediately to ensure there is no damage to your spine.

Whiplash Treatment — The Earlier, the Better

If your whiplash treatment is delayed or even worse, it goes untreated, it can lead to a host of chronic pain syndromes and neurological issues that can cause prolonged disability.

Research shows that early treatment is key in resolving injuries sustained from whiplash and for preventing long-term problems.

In addition, frequently applied submaximal movements in association with physical therapy was more effective than stabilization and rest.

Chiropractic care, which involves the gentle manipulation of spinal structures to return them to proper positioning, is a great way to realign vertebrae for optimal function.
